Naples is the reason people either fall in love with the south of Italy or never come back. It’s loud, dense, three thousand years old, and utterly unlike the coast an hour to the south.
Driving into it yourself is a bad idea: the traffic is a contact sport, the ZTL fines arrive months later, and parking near the historic centre is theoretical. With a driver, the city becomes what it should be: you get out, you walk a district, you get back in somewhere else.
Highlights
- Spaccanapoli and the Decumani, the straight Greek streets under the modern city
- The Veiled Christ in the Cappella Sansevero, the single most astonishing thing in the city
- The National Archaeological Museum, where everything found at Pompeii actually ended up
- Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace and the sea at Via Caracciolo
- Pizza where it was invented, not where the queue is longest

Good to know
- The old town is walked, not driven. Expect 4 to 6 km on foot on uneven basalt paving.
- Book Cappella Sansevero ahead. It’s small, it’s timed, and same day tickets are rare.
- Mondays and Tuesdays close things. Museum closing days rotate, we check against your date and rearrange.
- Keep your bag in front of you. Naples is no more dangerous than any big city, but the historic centre is crowded and pickpockets work crowds. Nothing dramatic, just normal city sense.
- August in the old town is hot and half shut. Many family restaurants close for two weeks around Ferragosto. We’ll tell you what’s open.
- Above 20 seats the historic centre isn’t practical: streets are narrow and the drop off points move considerably further out. For coach groups we build a different route and tell you exactly where you’ll walk.
Arriving or leaving by ship?
If Naples is also where your ship berths or where your train leaves from, we can do the day and the transfer as one job, with the luggage in the vehicle the whole time.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, in the areas of this itinerary, with normal city awareness. Our drivers know which streets are worth walking and which aren’t, and they’ll say so.
Not properly in the same day, you’d end up rushing both. Pompeii is on the way, so a short stop is possible, but a real visit needs its own tour.
Tell us your preference and we’ll book. Otherwise the driver has three or four places he would send his own family to, and none of them are on the main square.
Yes. Posillipo at the end of the afternoon, with the light on the gulf, is one of the best swaps you can make on this itinerary.
