The Amalfi Coast road is 40 kilometres of switchbacks carved into a cliff. Driven by someone who does it every week, it’s one of the great drives in Europe. Driven by a visitor in a rental car in August, it’s four hours of stress and nowhere to park.
We take the second option off the table. You sit on the sea side, the driver takes the bends, and the day is built around three stops: Positano for the colour, Amalfi for the history, Ravello for the silence and the view.
Highlights
- Positano from above, before the descent, the photograph everybody comes for
- The Duomo di Sant’Andrea in Amalfi and its Cloister of Paradise
- Ravello at 350 metres, with the Amalfi Coast laid out underneath
- Photo stops along the road wherever there’s space to pull over safely

Good to know
- It’s a day of walking, mostly uphill or downstairs. Positano is built on a slope and Ravello is on top of one. Comfortable shoes matter more here than anywhere else on this coast.
- Villa Rufolo or Villa Cimbrone, not both. Cimbrone is a 10 minute walk from the square and needs at least an hour. Choose in the morning, not at the gate.
- In July and August the road is slow. We start earlier and reverse the order, Ravello first, to stay ahead of the coaches.
- From November to March some things close. The coast is emptier and more beautiful, but check with us which villas and restaurants are open on your date.
- Motion sickness is real on this road. If someone in your group is prone to it, sit them in the front and tell the driver: he will take it differently.
Coming from the airport as well?
Almost everyone who books a day on the coast also needs the airport, the port or the station. Booked together it’s one quote, one driver who already knows your name, and usually less than two separate transfers.
Frequently asked questions
Not comfortably on this itinerary: the three stops are towns, not beaches, and you’d lose one of them. If swimming matters, ask us for the coast tour with a beach stop instead.
Not by default. Tell us in advance and we’ll book somewhere decent; otherwise the driver will point you to two or three places when you get out in Amalfi.
From one passenger to a full group. Vehicle type and itinerary are planned according to group size and local coach access restrictions, and larger groups may require multiple vehicles or alternative drop-off and pick-up points. Positano in particular has access limits that depend on the category and length of the vehicle: we plan the configuration around them. Above 8 passengers the access rules and parking change in Positano and Amalfi, and there are municipal charges: all stated in the quote.
Yes. From the port of Naples the day is longer and we plan it to get you back well before all aboard. Say your ship and your times in the request.
We go anyway: the vehicle is private and the towns are just as good under an umbrella. If the forecast is genuinely awful we’ll call you the evening before and talk about moving it.
