Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius: private tour from Sorrento

The volcano and the two towns it buried, in one day.
8 hours
Departure 08:00
Up to 53 passengers, in one or more vehicles
Every day except site closing days
Introduction

In AD 79 Vesuvius buried Pompeii under ash and Herculaneum under mud. The ash preserved a city; the mud preserved a neighbourhood so completely that the wooden beams and the doors are still there. Seeing both on the same day, with the volcano in between, is the only way the story makes sense.

Done by train and bus it’s a long, hot day with a lot of waiting. Done privately, the driver drops you at each entrance and picks you up at the exit: which at Pompeii, where the exit is a twenty minute walk from the entrance, isn’t a small detail.

Pompeii, about 27 km, 35 to 50 minutes

Two hours in the excavations. It’s a city of 66 hectares: two hours covers the forum, the Lupanare, the House of the Faun, the theatres and the Garden of the Fugitives at a decent pace. A licensed guide makes an enormous difference here and we recommend booking one, it’s the site where a guide is worth the money.

11:30 to 13:30

Vesuvius, about 32 km, 45 to 60 minutes

The vehicle climbs to the car park at 1,000 metres. From there it’s a walk of about 30 minutes up a gravel path to the crater rim: moderate effort, no technical difficulty, but it’s a climb and there’s no shade. A volcanological guide is included at the summit and walks the rim with you. On a clear day you can see Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula and the whole gulf.

14:15 to 15:15

Herculaneum, about 38 km, 50 to 65 minutes

One hour. Smaller and denser than Pompeii, and better preserved: two storey houses, carbonised wooden furniture, mosaics still in colour, and the boat sheds where over 300 people were found sheltering. If Pompeii is a city, Herculaneum is a street you could move into.

If your group would rather do two sites properly than three quickly, we drop Herculaneum and give the time to Pompeii. Say so in the morning.

Good to know

Coming from the airport as well?

Pompeii is on the road in from Capodichino. If you’re arriving or leaving on the same trip, say so in the request: we can put the site on the transfer instead of spending a second day on it.

Frequently asked questions

The volcanological guide at the Vesuvius crater is. Guides at Pompeii and Herculaneum aren’t: Italian law requires a licensed guide for that, our drivers can’t do it, and we’d rather book you a good one than pretend otherwise.

Yes, that’s the most common version. Same price, more time on each site, back earlier.

Realistically 6 to 8 kilometres over the day, on uneven ancient paving and volcanic gravel.

Tickets bought in advance avoid the ticket office queue, which is the long one. The security queue at Pompeii still exists in high season.

Most children over about six manage it fine. Below that, it’s a long carry.

Departure and pickup
Anywhere in Sorrento and the Peninsula, the port, or the Amalfi Coast. From Naples or a cruise ship the timings shift and we plan the day around your all aboard.
Suggested vehicles
Minivan up to 8 · Minibus up to 20 · Medium Coach up to 30 · Coach up to 43 · Full-size Coach up to 53. Vesuvius access has length restrictions: vehicles longer than 10.20 metres cannot normally make the climb. For larger groups the configuration may be split into two or more vehicles, because full-size coaches above the permitted length cannot access the Vesuvius route.
