Amalfi Coast private tour: Positano, Amalfi and Ravello

Eight hours, one road, three towns that could not be less alike.
8 hours
Departure 08:00
Up to 53 passengers, in one or more vehicles
Every day, all year
Introduction

The Amalfi Coast road is 40 kilometres of switchbacks carved into a cliff. Driven by someone who does it every week, it’s one of the great drives in Europe. Driven by a visitor in a rental car in August, it’s four hours of stress and nowhere to park.

We take the second option off the table. You sit on the sea side, the driver takes the bends, and the day is built around three stops: Positano for the colour, Amalfi for the history, Ravello for the silence and the view.

Highlights

Itinerary

08:00

Pickup

From your hotel, villa or Sorrento port. Port pickup is available with vehicles authorised and suitable for port access, and larger groups are operated with an appropriate minibus configuration. The driver introduces himself and goes through the day with you.
08:45 to 10:00

Positano, about 17 km, 25 to 40 minutes from Sorrento

We come down from Chiesa Nuova, where the town appears all at once. About an hour on the ground: Via dei Mulini down to the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its Byzantine Black Madonna, the Spiaggia Grande, the ceramics and linen shops. It’s steep: a lot of steps, all of them worth it, but worth knowing about in advance.

10:30 to 12:30

Amalfi, about 34 km, 45 to 60 minutes from Sorrento

Two hours. The Duomo with its 62 step staircase and its Cloister of Paradise, the small streets behind Piazza Duomo, the Paper Museum if that’s your thing. This is the natural place for lunch: spaghetti allo scoglio and a delizia al limone, and the driver will tell you where the locals actually eat.

13:15 to 15:15

Ravello, about 39 km, 55 to 70 minutes from Sorrento

Up 350 metres of hairpins and the noise stops. Two hours for Villa Rufolo or Villa Cimbrone, one, not both, unless you walk fast, the Terrace of Infinity, the Duomo square, the ceramics workshops. In summer the Ravello Festival has concerts on the garden terrace.

The road back

Photo stops on the way, and back to Sorrento by five o clock or thereabouts.

The order and the timings adapt: on a cruise day we compress, in August we start earlier, and if you’d rather spend three hours in Positano and skip Ravello, say so in the morning.

Good to know

Coming from the airport as well?

Almost everyone who books a day on the coast also needs the airport, the port or the station. Booked together it’s one quote, one driver who already knows your name, and usually less than two separate transfers.

Frequently asked questions

Not comfortably on this itinerary: the three stops are towns, not beaches, and you’d lose one of them. If swimming matters, ask us for the coast tour with a beach stop instead.

Not by default. Tell us in advance and we’ll book somewhere decent; otherwise the driver will point you to two or three places when you get out in Amalfi.

From one passenger to a full group. Vehicle type and itinerary are planned according to group size and local coach access restrictions, and larger groups may require multiple vehicles or alternative drop-off and pick-up points. Positano in particular has access limits that depend on the category and length of the vehicle: we plan the configuration around them. Above 8 passengers the access rules and parking change in Positano and Amalfi, and there are municipal charges: all stated in the quote.

Yes. From the port of Naples the day is longer and we plan it to get you back well before all aboard. Say your ship and your times in the request.

We go anyway: the vehicle is private and the towns are just as good under an umbrella. If the forecast is genuinely awful we’ll call you the evening before and talk about moving it.
